Bugs. Insects. Creepy Crawlies…

Did you know the UK is home to over 20,000 species of insects? Sadly, since the 1970s, their numbers have plummeted due to the widespread use of chemical-based farming methods. In fact, 41% of insect species in the UK are now at risk of extinction.

Even if insects aren’t your favorite creatures, let us explain why they’re so vital to our ecosystems and why we need to keep them thriving in the air, the soil, and beyond:

  • The foundation of the food web: Insects are a key food source for birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. With 60% of the world’s birds relying on insects for their diet, losing these tiny creatures could lead to the collapse of ecosystems.
  • Nature’s indicators: Insects act as environmental monitors, giving us valuable insight into pollution and climate change, and signaling when action is needed to protect our planet.
  • Natural recyclers: Insects break down waste—like dung, dead plants, and animals—and recycle it into nutrient-rich matter for the soil. This process supports new growth and keeps ecosystems healthy.
  • Garden guardians: Insects like ladybirds help control pests. A single ladybird larva can devour up to 1,000 aphids, preventing these pests from damaging plants.
  • Pollination champions: While bees often get the spotlight, many insects play a role in pollination. Around 80% of UK plants, including numerous crops, depend on insect pollinators.

So, how can you support these incredible creatures? Planting even one pollinator-friendly plant can make a difference. It provides food and a habitat for insects, which helps keep flowers blooming and crops thriving.

For an easy way to contribute, try our seed cards. These eco-friendly greeting cards are embedded with wildflower seeds. Once you’re done enjoying the card, simply tear it up or plant it whole in soil. With water and sunlight, your wildflowers will grow, creating food and shelter for insects. Since many wildflowers are self-seeding, you’ll enjoy their beauty year after year while supporting insect populations.
